“Make Haste Slowly”

quote from Augustus (and Benjamin Franklin)

How do you learn a piece quickly? By practicing slowly at first! If you take the time to work slowly and deliberately through the phrases of a new song, you will be able to get correct notes, fingering, rhythms, etc..... from the start. Rushing into a piece, and playing it t

oo quickly too soon, only brings about mistakes that will have to be corrected later on. (Remember, you will have to play a phrase correctly about 10 times just to erase a mistake that was previously learned). So, keep it slow and steady when you begin, and don't go any faster until you have it mastered at the slow speed. This will actually enable you to learn the piece in less time.
